Whats next?

Well would you look at this, year 3 it is! Only one year left to sort myself out and put together my portfolio. My next project is going to combine a mixture of informational graphics and identity to create a series of wine bottle labels. These wine labels will however be unique in the way they are meant for certain occasions, such as ‘the bad day at work wine’ or the ‘break up wine’. I need to think of a series of occasions that could be appropriate and then start to design a identity for the products to suit the range.

I’m going to research lots and lots of different wine labelling styles to enhance my knowledge of wine labelling and the information which is appropriate. For the informational graphics I intend to create a poster of similar, which explains the series of wines and connects them to the country of origin.

No 9 Nightclub Logo.
The brief was simple and short, “sweeping, brocade, purple” that was about all I had to go. So to begin with I just started messing around in Illustrator to see if anything exciting happened.

Examples of work which would be included in my portfolio. I’ve taken my most recent designs from Level 5 as I feel these portray my best work and relate to Identity.

Range of photographs of the final bookmarks, labels and book wraps.

Bookmarks and Labels for the shop. Each subject is in a different colour. Overall I’m really pleased with these bookmarks, taking the idea of how people ‘dog ear’ the page corners of books and turning it into a suitable solution. Both to protect the corners, remember the page and to allow the shop to categorise the books efficiently.

Final logo for the Giving Type! Im really happy with the end result, it just seems pleasing to the eye with the slight tilt of the letter ‘e’ to represent the last book on a shelf and i also feel it adds personality! I love how the letters are aligned and the equal spacing between the layers of text. If i continued to render the final logo i would consider looking at colour more.

Dog Ear Bookmarks. Im happy with the final outcome, especially the idea of how people normally ‘dog ear’ the pages of books. So this solution helps the protect the books but also remembers the page!

These are the ‘wrap arounds’ for the books that will be placed in the shop. I love Didot at the moment, it all ties in with the overall theme for the shop including the logo. These bands will be placed around the books in accordance to condition or special features inside the books such as signature or collectors editions.

Initial ideas placed into Illustrator. Here im looking at my new favourite font, Didot. Im simply experimenting with layout and positioning. The inspiration for these ideas came from images of books on a bookshelf and the way in which they are positioned. I’m going to continue to do more ideas and various approaches before I analyse them.

This was one of my ideas for the final logo, but I thinks it has too many colours to it and i should take them out.

Continuing more logo ideas and experimenting with layout and form. Here im adding shapes to form the layout of the bookshelf. I don’t think that these shapes work, they confine the space for the text and make them too busy. White space is good!

Looking at existing logos. I seem to have an interest in logos which have a hidden meaning or a witty style. Logos which need to have a double look to work out the meaning, to me it makes the logos engaging and definitely intriguing. The book ‘Smile in the Mind’ has been a real influence to me. Add pages to my sketch book.

The Brief

Charity shops have become suited to the older generation, the younger audience is less than happy to donate or to step inside.

Design a new identity for a charity bookshop, using an existing or new charity. The shop identity should be suited to the younger generation, mainly students studying at universities throughout the country.

It should be appealing and suited to the student market. The logo design should be modern, trendy and unique.

The logo should encourage students, but also others, to donate to the bookshop and to also visit. It will also reflect the charity aspect of the shop, but also that is a bookstore.

Bookmarks and labels will need to be created to promote the shop, they should reflect and relate to the brand identity.

Logo Design Love

Its the start if a new project, ideas are running through my head already!. To start my inspiration I’ve looked in a variety of logo and identity website. My favourite at the moment, Logo Design Love. Amazing logos and a great start for thinking about my logos.

First Design Idea for the Penguin Book Competition. I think this idea is too much like the penguin classics, I should try and refrain from this idea (using helvetica!)
